By Our Correspondent Abuja (Precise Post) – The Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria, (AMCON) is currently overwhelmed in debt and enormous operational difficulties putting it in dilemma over what to do with the current state of Arik Air Limited which it acquired five years ago. AMCON took over the airline in February 2017 and appointed Kamilu Omokide as its Receiver Manager with the mandate to turn around the fortunes of the ailing Africa’s biggest private carrier within a short period of time. Arik Air which had up to thirty serviceable aircraft with about three thousand workforce at its peak was down to ten airpanes as at December 2017 and was unable to operate flights due to mounting debts both local and foreign. The debt profile at the time of the AMCON acquisition was put at N300 billion comprising of foreign and local debts with a backlog of unpaid staff salaries and aviation statutory charges. Alleged AGF influence: EFCC probes trending audiotape

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday said it had begun investigation into a trending audiotape containing claims, allegedly made by one of its prosecutors, Mr. Mohammed Idris, about the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN). It said the recording of what may be a conversation between Idris and a relative of a crime suspect contained “unsubstantiated claims” regarding the minister’s influence on the commission. The Nation reports that Idris, a police officer seconded to the EFCC, handles several cases for the commission in Lagos and elsewhere. The social media has been awash with the recording, which allegedly involves the lawyer discussing with the younger brother of a suspect facing corruption charges. The conversation claims that the minister compromised cases of corruption in the country. …..Bemoans Incessant Extortion Of Passengers By Airport Officials By Our Reporter Lagos – The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said that a staff of Arik airline was apprehended while soliciting bribe from a passenger at the general aviation terminal in Lagos. Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, General Manager, Corporate Affairs of FAAN confirmed the development in a statement in Lagos on Tuesday. Yakubu said that this called for concern at an emergency FAAN management meeting on the incessant extortion of passengers by airport officials at the nation’s airports and steps being taken to address the situation. She said that the on-duty card of the erring staff was withdrawn immediately, and she was handed over to the relevant security agency for appropriate action in order to serve as deterrent to other bad eggs in the airport. Arik Air Sacks 300 Workers, Gives Reason

300 workers have been sacked by the management of Arik Air. This was announced in a statement by the airline on Friday. It blamed the sacking on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The press statement was titled, “Arik Air management declares 300 staff redundant”. The company explained that a redundancy package would be provided for the affected workers with the help of the aviation unions. The statement read partly, “Arising from the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the constrained ability of the airline to complete heavy maintenance activities and return its planes to operations, stunted revenues against increasing operational costs, the management of Arik Air (In Receivership) has declared 300 staff members redundant to its current level of operations. “The leadership of the impacted unions have been contacted to negotiate a redundancy package for the affected staff.” More to come… Source

Arik Air Resumes Services To Asaba

By Yunus Yusuf Lagos – Arik Air on Thursday announced the resumption of flight services to Asaba Airport in Delta. Arik Air Chief Executive Officer, Capt. Roy Ilegbodu, said in a statement in Lagos that starting from Dec. 18, the airline would be operating daily flights from Lagos to Asaba. Arik Air Resumes Flights To Owerri

By Yunus Yusuf Lagos – Arik Air says it will resume flight services to the Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri, from Oct. 21. The airline made the announcement in a statement signed by its Chief Executive Officer, Capt. Roy Ilegbodu, on Monday in Lagos. Ilegbodu said the airline suspended flights to Owerri early in 2019 due to operational exigencies, adding that since then passengers had been yearning for a return of the carrier. He said re-launch of flights to Owerri was coming on the heels of resumption of services to Warri by the airline on Sept. 6. “We made a promise to our esteemed customers that we will be returning to the routes that were suspended earlier in the year and our resumption of flights to Warri and now Owerri are a promise kept. “In the coming weeks, the airline will be returning to more previously suspended destinations as well as opening more routes to cope with passengers’ demands,’’ Ilegbodu added.
