ABUJA- A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Thursday, awarded a N500 million in damages against Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi for violating the fundamental rights of Murtala Ajaka, the Social Democratic Party (SDP)’s candidate in the Nov. 11 governorship election in the state. Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment, also directed Gov. Bello to tender public apology to Ajaka “for the gross and unwarranted violation” of his rights. Justice Ekwo equally made an order directing the security agencies and their heads, listed as 2nd to 7th respondents, to provide maximum security and ensure Ajaka’s safety, including his property, within Abuja, Kogi and Nigeria before, during and after the governorship poll held Nov. 11. The judge further made “an order of injunction, restraining the security agencies from arresting/abducting, detaining and/or further harassing, intimidating, shooting/threatening the applicant’s life and properties.” The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Ajaka had, in the originating motion marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/952/2023 dated and filed on July 11 by S.E. Police confirm attack on Kogi election panel official, warn against inflammatory statements

LOKOJA- The Kogi Police Command on Wednesday confirmed an attack on the Secretary of the State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, Mr. David Mike, on Monday by gunmen. A statement issued in Lokoja by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Williams Ovye-Aya, said the secretary was attacked along two other persons on the day. ABUJA- Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, the President of the Court of Appeal, has relocated the Kogi Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal from Lokoja to Abuja. A statement by Mr David Umar Mike, Secretary of the Tribunal, said that its sittings would now be at the National Judicial Institute on Umar Yar’Adua Way. It urged litigants to take note of the change in venue. LOKOJA- Women and youth groups in Kogi on Saturday pleaded with the  Governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Alh. Military beefs up security at INEC office in Lokoja following siege by mob

LOKOJA- The military beefed up security around INEC’s headquarters in Lokoja on Wednesday following a siege laid on the premises by a mob. Commissioner of Police in Kogi, Mr Bethrand Onuoha invited the military to the INEC office after the mob laid the siege. Onuoha alerted the Commander, 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. LOKOJA- The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday presented certificates of return to the Kogi Governor-Elect, Usman Ododo and his Deputy, Joel Salifu. Ododo and Salifu of the All Progressive Congress (APC) had won the Nov 11 Off-Cycle Governorship Election in Kogi with 446,237 votes, to beat their closest rivals, Murtala Ajaka and Sam Ranti-Abenemi of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) that garnered 259,052 votes. INEC suspends election in some locations in Kogi over completed result sheets

By Chris Udochukwu The Independent National Electoral Commission has suspended election in some locations in Kogi over electoral malpractices. The Commission has received reports from our officials in Kogi State on incidences of electoral malpractices, particularly the incident of result sheets completed before voting. Reports indicate that the incidents occurred in Adavi, Ajaokuta, Ogori/Magongo, Okehi and Okene Local Government Areas. The most serious incidents occurred in Ogori/Magongo, affecting nine of 10 Registration Areas. This is entirely unacceptable. Any result not emanating from the Commission’s process in the Polling Units will not be accepted. The Commission is determined not to reward bad behaviour. Consequently, the election in the nine Wards in Ogori/Magongo LGA (Eni, Okibo, Okesi, Ileteju, Aiyeromi, Ugugu, Obinoyin, Obatgben and Oturu) is at this moment suspended. The incidences in the other Local Government Areas are being thoroughly investigated, and the outcome, including the way forward, will be announced in the next 24 hours. Dozens of thugs invade Kogi NUJ secretariat, fight over ‘mobilization fee’ (VIDEO)

KOGI- Some suspected thugs have reportedly broken into the secretariat of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, on Saturday. The NUJ secretariat is not far from the Crowther College which houses a considerable number of polling units. According to a video shared on X (Twitter) by Punch, the hoodlums stormed in with cars and a motorcycle and were seen haggling over mobilisation fees for the elections before being eventually kicked out by security operatives. Kogi guber: No report of security breach, poll peaceful- Police

LOKOJA- Mr Habu Sani, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG)  in charge of security  in the Kogi Governorship Election, says the election so far,  is peaceful as no security breach has been reported. The DIG made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja on Saturday via a  telephone interview. He said that from all indications,  the electorate and political actors in the poll were behaving well. “As it’s now, there’s no report of breach of security from any part of  Kogi. “We thank God that what we have been praying for is indeed manifesting to show a sharp deviation from past experiences in Kogi. “We urge residents to maintain this peace even after the election so that Kogi can continue to experience the desired growth and development as a state, ” he said. According to him, his officers and men alongside other security agencies are doing their bests to ensure that the election remains peaceful till the end.
