ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Ubited States President Donald Trump has announced an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that he said would give the United States “permanent control” over the security of the strategically important Arctic territory.
Trump made the declaration in remarks posted on his X handle on Saturday, describing the arrangement as an “Infinite Life” agreement that would have no end.
According to the US president, the agreement would give Washington the enduring ability to take whatever measures it considers necessary to secure and defend Greenland and the United States.
“At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America,” Trump said.
He further stated that no US adversary would be allowed to establish a military base or military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments there, without the express written approval of the United States.
Trump said the agreement would come at “NO COST” to the United States, while announcing plans for an expanded American military presence on the island.
“We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland,” he said, adding that the US would work with Greenlanders on the development and construction.
The announcement marks a major development in Trump’s longstanding push to strengthen US strategic control and military access in Greenland, which he has repeatedly described as vital to American national security.
However, the precise terms of the agreement have not been publicly released. Danish and Greenlandic officials have indicated that the agreement is expected to be formally signed during the United Nations General Assembly in New York and would require the necessary parliamentary procedures before taking effect. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has also stressed that the arrangement recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.
Trump, nevertheless, portrayed the development as a historic resolution of a longstanding strategic issue.
“For over 100 years, Presidents have known the strategic importance of Greenland, but NONE of them were able to do anything about it,” he said.
“I am proud to be the President that permanently and conclusively addressed this very important situation.”
He described the agreement as a “dream come true for the United States of America,” saying it would be beneficial to the United States, Denmark, Greenland and its allies.
The announcement has been reported as a significant shift in the US-Greenland security relationship, although reporting indicates that the deal stops short of transferring sovereignty over Greenland to the United States.
