Abuja, Nigeria – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called on the Senate to increase funding for the FCT, stressing the need for more resources to drive critical infrastructure projects.
Wike made the appeal on Thursday during the official flag-off of the Integrated (Hybrid) Solar Street Lighting Project in Abuja city districts and major expressways under the “Light Up Abuja” programme (Lots I and II).
Acknowledging the presence of Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South at the event, the minister urged him to champion increased budgetary allocations for the FCT.
“Senator Ndume, I know where you are living; it has no streetlights. But go home tonight and sleep without them. That is why each time you are in the Senate, make sure when we ask for ₦1, you increase it to ₦5—knowing fully well that the funds will be properly utilized. That is what matters,” Wike said.
The minister also expressed appreciation to both chambers of the National Assembly for their continued support, assuring that the FCT administration remains committed to accountability and transparency.
“Each day we go out, you always give us support. It’s very important. I thank all of you and invite you to join us as we flag off the light of our work,” he added.
The “Light Up Abuja” initiative is one of Wike’s flagship infrastructure projects, designed to modernize street lighting across the capital city and its major highways, improve security, and enhance the city’s aesthetics.
