FG Issues Public Alert on Fake, Life-Threatening Oxytocin Injection

by Joy: News Admin

The Federal Government, through the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has raised an alarm over the circulation of a dangerous and unregistered Oxytocin injection carrying a fake NAFDAC number.

The product, branded Gold Vision Oxytocin Injection 10IU, was discovered with a falsified registration number: A4-9566.

Why this is dangerous:
Oxytocin injections are used to prevent excessive bleeding after childbirth. However, fake or poor-quality versions can cause serious health risks for mothers and newborns, including postpartum haemorrhage, emergency surgery, and even death.

What NAFDAC Found

The injection is reportedly manufactured by Anhui Hongye Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., China, and marketed by Gold Vision Medicals, Enugu, Nigeria.

During a Risk-Based Product Monitoring Survey (RBPMS 2023), three other fake injections—A-tocin, Extocin, and Claxitodin—were also discovered.

All four products carry the same fake NAFDAC number.

None of them are listed in NAFDAC’s official database, confirming them as falsified medicines.

The Health Risks

Medical experts warn that such fake injections may:

Contain wrong dosages

Lack active ingredients

Include toxic contaminants

This could result in ineffective treatment, uncontrolled bleeding after childbirth, and life-threatening complications.

NAFDAC’s Call to Action

The agency has urged Nigerians—especially health workers and mothers—to remain alert. Suspicious products should be reported immediately:
Toll-free line: 0800-162-3322
Email: [email protected]

NAFDAC stressed that it is committed to removing fake drugs from circulation and protecting Nigerians from harmful medical products.

This comes shortly after NAFDAC also warned against fake Postinor-2 emergency contraceptives, which were discovered in circulation earlier this year.

Bottom line: Nigerians are urged to verify medicines before use and avoid purchasing drugs without proper verification.
