Liverpool manager Arne Slot has praised Everton for the solidarity they showed following the shocking death of Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car accident in Spain in July at just 28 years old.
Jota’s final goal came in April’s Merseyside derby—a 1-0 Liverpool victory—just weeks before the club celebrated their Premier League title. Everton return to Anfield on Saturday, and Slot used his pre-match press conference to highlight the rare show of unity between the fierce rivals.
“They are a good team and there is rivalry,” Slot said on Friday. “But what I want to emphasise is the respect they showed when Diogo passed away.
In tragedy, the rivalry remains, but the respect was so clear. That means a lot.”
Despite a massive £450 million summer overhaul, Liverpool have maintained a perfect start under Slot, winning all five Premier League and Champions League games—each secured by late goals.
“I prefer winning while knowing we can still improve,” Slot added. “That’s better than losing games.”
The Dutch boss is confident his new signings can handle the high stakes of the Merseyside derby, pointing to their experience in other intense fixtures.
“It’s not the first time they’ll play with this kind of rivalry and intensity,” he said. “Our focus must be on winning duels, staying intense, and playing well both on and off the ball.”
Alexander Isak, Liverpool’s record £125 million signing from Newcastle, made his debut in Wednesday’s 3-2 Champions League win over Atletico Madrid, but Slot hinted the striker may be rested after feeling the effects of a limited pre-season. Hugo Ekitike is expected to start in his place.
