A coalition of civil society groups has raised the alarm over a looming strategic victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections — unless opposition leaders Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi unite behind a single presidential ticket.
The warning came following a high-level strategy session in Abuja, which brought together members of the Save Democracy Mega Alliance (SDMA), Civil Societies Alliance, and other pro-democracy organisations. The meeting focused on crafting a formidable plan to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.
Opposition Unity or Political Defeat — The Stark Choice Ahead
Addressing stakeholders at the Abuja gathering, Tony Akeni, SDMA’s South-South Coordinator, said internal research conducted by the coalition paints a dire picture: a fragmented opposition is no match for Tinubu’s well-oiled political machinery.
“If the right decisions are taken by opposition leaders and electorates, we can reclaim our democracy through the ballot in 2027,” Akeni said.
“However, if key opposition figures pursue parallel ambitions, the consequences will be severe and far-reaching for Nigeria.”
Tinubu’s Alleged Strategy: Divide and Conquer
According to Akeni, intelligence gathered by the coalition suggests that the APC is laying a calculated and systemic foundation designed to suppress any real electoral challenge — especially if Atiku Abubakar (now with the African Democratic Congress) and Peter Obi (Labour Party) contest separately.
“The ruling APC has strategically and scientifically installed virtually insurmountable obstacles to free and fair elections,” Akeni warned.
“Neither Atiku nor Obi stands a real chance in 2027 unless they run on a unified ticket.”
The High Stakes: 2027 Won’t Be Business as Usual
The coalition argued that Nigeria is at a pivotal moment and urged both opposition leaders to make sacrificial, strategic decisions in the interest of national redemption.
“Nigeria is blessed with two credible, experienced, and visionary leaders in Atiku and Obi,” Akeni said.
“But their chances — and Nigeria’s future — hang in the balance if they repeat the mistakes of 2023 by going it alone.”
Dalung: 2027 Will Be a Battle Between the People and Tinubu
In a related development, former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, has declared that the 2027 elections will be more than a political contest — they will be a direct confrontation between the Nigerian people and the Tinubu-led administration.
Speaking during a recent interview on News Central, Dalung expressed deep concern over the worsening economic crisis, blaming Tinubu’s government for what he called “unchecked hardship” across the country.
“This is no longer about party politics. The 2027 election will be about survival and justice for ordinary Nigerians,” Dalung said.

The coalition says it will intensify consultations with key opposition figures, civil society organisations, and electoral stakeholders to push for a unified political front ahead of 2027. The SDMA has also vowed to release its strategic framework for opposition collaboration in the coming months.
For now, all eyes remain on Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi — and whether they will rise to the occasion or risk splitting the vote once again.
