Owerri, Imo State – The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden death of its Deputy Spokesperson in Imo State, Ugochimereze Chinedu Asuzu.
Asuzu, a respected political strategist and cultural advocate, reportedly slumped and died in the early hours of Wednesday, October 1, just as Nigerians gear up for the 2027 general elections.
Confirming the tragic incident in a statement, ADC’s spokesperson in Imo, MacDonald Amadi, described the late Asuzu as “a man of uncommon intellect, conviction, and service whose passing is an irreplaceable loss to his family, the ADC family, and the Nigerian society at large.”
Who Was Ugochimereze Asuzu?
A native of Umuma Isiaku, Ideato South LGA, Imo State
Holder of degrees in Theology and Political Science, and was pursuing a doctorate before his demise
Founder of Igbo Intelligentsia Renaissance, a platform promoting cultural renewal and intellectual dialogue
National Leader of “I Stand With ADC”, a coalition group mobilizing grassroots support for the party
Former PDP chieftain, prolific writer, public affairs analyst, husband, father, and mentor to many
ADC in Mourning
The party hailed Asuzu as a devoted leader whose ideas and vision were instrumental in strengthening ADC as an emerging third force ahead of 2027.
Beyond politics, he was celebrated as a theologian, entrepreneur, cultural activist, and community builder. His passing has left a huge vacuum in both religious and secular circles.
ADC’s Rising Political Force
The opposition coalition officially adopted ADC as its platform on July 2, 2025, positioning itself as a credible alternative to the APC and PDP ahead of 2027.
Former Senate President David Mark leads the new coalition, which has attracted heavyweights including:
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi
Ex-Kaduna Governor, Nasir El-Rufai
Ex-Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi
Former SGF, Babachir Lawal
Their mission: to unseat President Bola Tinubu democratically in 2027.
Imo Politics and ADC’s Strength
In a related development, former Imo Governor Emeka Ihedioha officially joined the ADC earlier this year, declaring the party as the new home for his Rebuild Imo Movement.
With influential figures rallying around it, ADC is increasingly seen as a strong third force capable of reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
This heartbreaking loss comes at a critical moment for the ADC, as the party battles to consolidate its position ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 general elections.
