Madagascar Lawmakers Impeach President Rajoelina for ‘Desertion of Duty

by Joy: News Admin

Madagascar’s political turmoil deepened on Tuesday as the National Assembly voted overwhelmingly to impeach President Andry Rajoelina, accusing him of “desertion of duty” amid growing public unrest.

Lawmakers in the 163-member chamber approved the motion with 130 votes in favour, surpassing the two-thirds majority required by the constitution. The move marks a major setback for Rajoelina, who has reportedly gone into hiding as protests escalate over his government’s handling of national affairs.

In its resolution, parliament accused the president of neglecting his constitutional responsibilities and failing to address the worsening political and economic crisis gripping the island nation.

However, the presidency swiftly rejected the impeachment, dismissing it as “illegitimate and without legal foundation.”

“The session and its outcome have no standing in law,”
a presidential spokesperson said, insisting that President Rajoelina remains in office and continues to perform his duties.

Rajoelina, who returned to power in 2019 after leading a transitional government between 2009 and 2014, has faced mounting opposition pressure in recent weeks. Protesters and opposition groups are calling for his resignation and fresh elections, as discontent spreads across Madagascar.
