Unpaid Power Bill: Inside Nigeria Embassy’s Brief Electricity Disconnection in South Africa

by Arabella Zikora

Electricity supply to the Nigerian High Commission in Tshwane, South Africa, has been disconnected over unpaid electricity bills.

The city’s executive mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, disclosed on X that the power had been disconnected because the mission failed to settle its charges as required.

A few hours later, Dr Moya confirmed that electricity had been restored to the diplomatic post.

This is not the first occasion on which unpaid bills have led to a power cut at a Nigerian diplomatic office in South Africa.

In January 2023, City Power, the electricity distribution company in Johannesburg, disconnected supply to Nigeria’s consulate over an unpaid bill of approximately $35,000.
