Jurgen Klopp’s Germany debut ended in heartbreak as Cody Gakpo scored a 92nd-minute equalizer to earn Netherlands a 1-1 draw in Group A2.
This was a clash of two new philosophies – Xavi Hernandez, the first foreign Dutch coach since 1978, against Klopp who took over Germany in July after their shocking World Cup exit to Paraguay in the Round of 16.
First Half Chaos
Netherlands thought they led in the 13th minute when Virgil van Dijk headed in from a corner, but VAR ruled it out for a foul on Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Germany took the lead against the run of play on 32 minutes – debutant full-back Philipp Treu cut back for Felix Nmecha to slot from close range.
Bad news for Klopp: playmaker Jamal Musiala felt muscle pain in the warm-up and missed the game, then Kai Havertz went off injured on 30 minutes.
Second Half
Netherlands dominated with 18 shots in the second half. Ter Stegen made six saves, his best performance since 2022.
Finally, in the 92nd minute, Netherlands countered – Tijjani Reijnders released Gakpo who volleyed into the far corner. 1-1.
Tactical Breakdown
Germany’s Press: Klopp implemented his signature gegenpressing, but without Musiala’s creativity, Germany struggled to sustain attacks. The early injury to Havertz disrupted their rhythm.
Netherlands’ Response: Xavi’s side showed character. Their second-half barrage demonstrated tactical flexibility, with Reijnders and Gakpo combining for the late equalizer.
Xavi after: “We showed character.” Klopp: “We lost control. Lesson learned.”
