A brewing crisis is unfolding within the United Methodist Church of Nigeria (UMCN), as members of the Global Methodist Church (GMC) occupied the UMCN secretariat in Mile Six, Jalingo, Taraba State, despite an existing executive order prohibiting such actions.
The GMC reportedly used the secretariat to host their newly appointed bishop, sparking outrage among UMCN members.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Jalingo and signed by Agabi Bappa
Assistant Secretary UMCN Mcbride, the group alleges that the members of the UMCN in retaliation occupied the gates of the premises before they were dislodged by security agencies.
However, according to an eyewitness Hon. Driver Jalo, the situation took a dramatic turn when the Nigerian Army, led by one Captain Gana, arrested and detained some UMCN leaders at the headquarters of Nigerian police, Taraba State command while they were gathered outside the gate.
This incident is the latest in a series of tensions between the UMCN and GMC, which have been at odds over issues such as LGBTQ+ rights and regionalization. The UMCN has maintained its stance against same-sex marriage, aligning with Nigerian law and biblical teachings.
The conflict has been escalating since the UMC’s General Conference in April, where delegates voted to remove bans on same-sex marriage and ordaining LGBTQ+ clergy. This decision has sparked resistance from African churches, including the UMC in Nigeria, which reject LGBTQ+ recognition.
As the situation continues to unfold, concerns about the safety and well-being of UMCN members and leaders remains worrisome. The Nigerian government’s response to the crisis will be crucial in resolving the conflict and maintaining peace within the religious community.
