ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Former Anambra State Governor and presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, has called for greater investment in children’s education, healthcare, and welfare, saying Nigeria’s future depends on how well it nurtures its younger generation.
In an open letter to mark this year’s Children’s Day celebration released on his X handle on Wednesday, Obi described Nigerian children as the nation’s “vibrant pulse in the present” and the foundation for a better future.
According to him, every Nigerian child possesses enormous potential capable of competing with the best in the world if provided with the right opportunities and resources.
The former governor said he sees future scientists, innovators, leaders, and builders in children across the country, including those in classrooms, internally displaced persons camps, and on the streets.
Obi stressed that the true test of leadership lies in how a nation treats its children, lamenting that millions of Nigerian children remain out of school while access to quality healthcare and safety is still treated as a privilege rather than a basic right.
He argued that Nigeria cannot successfully transition from a consumption-driven economy to a productive nation without significant investment in human capital development, especially in education and healthcare.
“Failing to invest in our children today is akin to borrowing from our future,” he said.
Obi urged leaders, parents, and teachers to prioritise the development of children, noting that foundational education and proper healthcare remain the best investments any nation can make.
Addressing children directly, Obi encouraged them to continue dreaming despite present challenges, remain curious through learning and technology, and take pride in their Nigerian identity.
He described Nigerian children as resilient, brilliant, and full of promise, assuring them that efforts would continue toward building a country where their dreams are protected and their future guaranteed.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate also reiterated his commitment to a “new Nigeria” where schools are safe and opportunities are accessible to every child.
