OYO ( PRECISE POST) – Report reaching Precise Post has it that academic activities were brought to a standstill across public primary and secondary schools in Oyo State on Monday as teachers embarked on an indefinite strike to demand the immediate rescue of abducted colleagues and pupils still in captivity.
The industrial action, declared by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), followed growing concerns over the continued abduction of teachers and schoolchildren kidnapped on May 15, 2026, from Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in Ogbomoso.
The union’s national leadership said the strike became necessary due to the uncertainty surrounding the fate of the victims, stressing that the prolonged captivity has disrupted learning, heightened fears among parents, and created tension within affected communities.
In a statement, Oyo State NUT Chairman, Comrade Hassan Fatai, said the action was intended to draw urgent government attention to the worsening situation.
“The industrial action is aimed at drawing the attention of government authorities to the urgent need to intensify efforts toward securing the safe release of the abductees without further delay,” Fatai stated.
He directed teachers across the state to remain at home, stay law-abiding, and avoid exposing themselves to any form of danger while the union continues to engage relevant authorities.
The NUT also reaffirmed its support for the abducted teachers, pupils, and their families, pledging to sustain pressure until all those held captive are safely released.
The strike comes amid intensified government intervention. President Bola Tinubu had on Sunday ordered the immediate recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to strengthen security operations aimed at securing the victims’ release.
A Federal Government delegation led by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Defence Minister Christopher Musa, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe, and presidential aide Sunday Dare visited Ogbomoso to meet with grieving families.
During the visit, Gbajabiamila conveyed the President’s directive to security agencies to ensure the swift rescue and safe return of all abductees.
Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier visited Ogbomoso, assuring residents that every available measure was being deployed to secure the victims’ freedom, while urging citizens to remain united and avoid politicising the incident.
The union maintained that it would not relent in its demand for justice and safety until every abducted teacher and pupil is reunited with their families.
