ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The House of Representatives has stressed the need for a united and solution-driven approach to tackling Nigeria’s security challenges, reminding members of its Minority Caucus that national security is a shared constitutional responsibility that transcends political affiliations.
In a statement issued by the House Spokesman, Rep. Akintunde Rotimi Jr., the Green Chamber acknowledged recent comments by the Minority Caucus on the country’s security situation, describing the concerns raised as reflective of genuine public anxieties over rising threats in parts of the country.
The House noted that security remains an urgent national issue requiring sustained vigilance, coordinated action and collaboration among all arms of government.
According to the statement, Nigeria’s security challenges developed over time and cannot be addressed through isolated interventions. It said the National Assembly, in partnership with the Executive and security agencies, has continued to strengthen the country’s security architecture through legislation, budgetary provisions and oversight functions aimed at improving intelligence gathering, operational effectiveness, troop welfare and overall national preparedness.
The House also highlighted ongoing efforts by security agencies across various theatres of operation, including actions to dismantle criminal networks, rescue abducted victims and restore stability in vulnerable communities.
While acknowledging that challenges persist, it maintained that recent operational successes indicate steady progress that should be sustained and expanded.
The lawmakers further cautioned against viewing the security situation through a narrow lens, stressing that public discourse should be based on a balanced assessment of prevailing realities, historical developments and measurable outcomes.
Responding specifically to issues raised by the Minority Caucus, the House emphasized that lawmakers possess constitutionally backed tools for influencing national security outcomes, including legislation, motions, committee oversight, appropriation powers and constituency engagement.
It noted that members of the Minority Caucus remain integral stakeholders within the legislative arm of government and therefore share responsibility for shaping policies, strengthening institutions and supporting effective security interventions.
“The obligation to offer solutions, strengthen institutions and support effective policy implementation is a shared one, not one divided along caucus lines,” the statement said.
The House contrasted the role of legislators with that of civil society groups, noting that lawmakers operate within the formal decision-making structure of government and are empowered to effect change through legislative processes.
It therefore encouraged all members, regardless of political affiliation, to continue translating public concerns into actionable proposals capable of legislative consideration and implementation.
House Leader, Rt. Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, was quoted as saying that security remains a collective national responsibility requiring commitment from all stakeholders.
“Security remains a shared national responsibility that transcends political affiliation. Our duty as Parliament is not only to express concern but to ensure such concerns are translated into effective legislative and oversight actions that strengthen national security,” he said.
Ihonvbere further stressed that the strength of the House lies in its unity despite differing political perspectives.
“The strength of the House lies in its unity of purpose, even amid differing perspectives. Majority or Minority, we are bound by the same constitutional responsibility to the Nigerian people,” he added.
The House acknowledged the continuing impact of insecurity on communities, livelihoods and vulnerable populations across the country, describing the situation as a reminder of the need for sustained national engagement and continuous improvement in security operations.
It reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Executive, security agencies, state governments and other stakeholders to enhance security outcomes nationwide.
The statement therefore concluded that Nigeria’s security challenges would be overcome through sustained investment, institutional discipline, inter-agency cooperation and collective national resolve rather than rhetoric alone.
