ABUJA (PRECISE POST)  –   Labour Party presidential flagbearer in the 2023 general election and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, on Saturdy paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Nigerian football legend and former Green Eagles captain, Peter Rufai, in Lagos.

Obi, who desscribed Rufai as one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation,  praised his contributions to Nigeria’s sporting legacy, noting that his heroics in goal brought pride and joy to millions of Nigerians.

In a statement released on his X handle following the visit, Obi reflected on the broader issue of national neglect of heroes and citizens facing hardship.

“Reading about the tragedy of most Nigerians, how some of them struggled to cater to their needs when challenged by misfortune, I am strengthened in my belief that we must all work together to create the Nigeria of our dreams,” he said.

He emphasized the need for a country where service and sacrifice are acknowledged and rewarded, and where citizens; especially those who served the nation with distinction, can live with dignity and security.

“In moments like this, we are reminded that a nation’s greatness is also measured by the value it places on those who gave their all for her,” Obi added. “Peter Rufai belongs to this league of heroes, and it is our collective duty to ensure that their memories inspire us, and that their sacrifices are never in vain.”

Peter Rufai, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper, remains a revered figure in Nigerian sports history, remembered for his skill, leadership, and dedication to the national team.

Precise Post recalls that Rufai was the goalkeeper of the Nigerian Team that took part in her first World Cup tournament.
