Fresh political intrigue is unfolding as reports suggest that former President Goodluck Jonathan is being courted by a powerful bloc within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to contest the 2027 presidential election.
According to sources quoted by the Nigerian Tribune, Jonathan is seriously considering the offer, though he remains torn between his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the fresh opportunity the ADC presents.
A party insider revealed on Friday that Jonathan’s hesitation stems from concerns about entrenched PDP powerbrokers with close ties to the Presidency.
“Former President Jonathan is worried that some individuals with strong Villa connections may still control the PDP and could frustrate his ambitions if he seeks the ticket there,” the insider disclosed.
The ADC leadership, however, reportedly views Jonathan as a game-changer capable of boosting the party’s chances in 2027.
Still, Jonathan is said to be cautious about a potential face-off with Labour Party’s Peter Obi, whom he respects for the overwhelming Igbo support he received during his own 2015 campaign.
“His only worry with the ADC is that he doesn’t want to contest against Peter Obi because he believes the Igbo people supported him in 2015 even more than his own Ijaw people,” the source explained.
To ease the path for Jonathan, ADC insiders claim the party is willing to adjust its zoning formula.
“If he joins our party, we will zone the presidency to the South. But if he doesn’t, we may have no option but to shift power to the North because politics is about numbers and winning,” the insider added.
As speculation intensifies, political watchers believe Jonathan’s decision could significantly reshape Nigeria’s 2027 race and test alliances across major political blocs.
