Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria quietly and without prior public announcement following her release from a prison in the United Kingdom.
Mrs Ekweremadu arrived in Abuja on Tuesday, January 21, 2026, and was discreetly received by family members and close associates at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, marking her first return to the country since her arrest and conviction in the high-profile organ-harvesting case in 2022.
Sources said the return was deliberately low-key, with no official reception or public engagement, although reports later emerged of private celebrations in her hometown of Mpu, Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Mrs Ekweremadu was convicted in May 2023 by the Old Bailey in London and sentenced to four years and six months in prison for conspiring to facilitate the travel of a 21-year-old Lagos street trader to the UK for the purpose of harvesting his kidney.
The organ was intended for the couple’s daughter, Sonia, who suffers from a chronic kidney condition.
The case, prosecuted under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015, was the first human organ-harvesting prosecution under the legislation.
Under UK law, non-violent offenders may be released on licence after serving half of their custodial term. Mrs Ekweremadu’s release was reportedly aided by good conduct while in custody and a UK government initiative to ease prison overcrowding.
Despite her return, Senator Ike Ekweremadu remains in custody in the United Kingdom. He was sentenced in May 2023 to nine years and eight months in prison after the court described him as the main driver of the conspiracy.
The third defendant, Dr Obinna Obeta, described by prosecutors as the medical “middleman,” is serving a 10-year sentence in the UK.
Efforts by the Nigerian government to secure Senator Ekweremadu’s repatriation through a Prisoner Transfer Agreement have so far been unsuccessful. In November 2025, the UK Home Office reportedly declined such a request, citing concerns about the continued enforcement of the sentence if transferred to Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the couple’s daughter, Sonia, who was cleared of criminal charges during the trial, remains in the UK, where she is receiving ongoing medical treatment.
