ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged West African and Sahel nations to reactivate a regional standby force to strengthen collective security and confront the worsening insecurity threatening the sub-region.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu who disclosed this on her official X handle on Sunday, said the call was made at the recently concluded High-Level Conference on Security and Regional Cooperation held in Accra, Ghana, and hosted by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.
Representing President Tinubu at the gathering, Bianca Ojukwu delivered Nigeria’s statement before an audience of several West African Heads of State, their representatives, and delegates from Sahel countries.
In the address, President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding peace, security, and stability across the region, stressing that urgent multilateral collaboration is needed to tackle the escalating security challenges in the Sahel.
He further encouraged countries in the region to leverage Nigeria’s National Counter Terrorism Centre in Abuja as a central hub for intelligence coordination and counterterrorism operations.
According to Tinubu, security cooperation remains vital to Nigeria’s national interest and the stability of West Africa.
He noted that through joint initiatives, intelligence sharing, and coordinated regional operations, Nigeria aims to boost collective capacity to combat terrorism, transnational organised crime, and other forms of insecurity undermining development across member states.
Precise Post recalls that the conference underscored growing regional concern over instability in the Sahel and renewed calls for stronger cooperation among neighbouring nations.
