ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Former Kaduna Central senator Shehu Sani has slammed U.S. President Donald Trump over his criticisms to a ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States.
Shehu Sani, who took to his X handle account on Sunday @ShehuSani to raise concern over democratic standard, pointed to what he described as a contradiction in how political conduct is judged across different regions of the world.
According to him, Trump openly described the U.S. Supreme Court as a “disgrace” after it issued a ruling concerning tariffs, and subsequently moved to circumvent the court’s decision.
Sani argued that such actions would attract far harsher labels if carried out by leaders outside the Western world.
“If any African, Asian, or Latin American leader attempts such a move, they would be branded a dictator who has no respect for the rule of law,” he stated.
Precise Post recalls that the comments come amid longstanding debates over executive authority, judicial independence, and the balance of powers within democratic systems.
In the United States, tensions between the presidency and the judiciary have historically surfaced when court decisions limit executive actions, particularly on issues of trade and national policy.
Sani’s remarks underscore a broader critique often raised by political observers in the Global South, that democratic standards and interpretations of constitutional defiance are not applied evenly across nations.
While supporters of Trump have defended his reaction as political disagreement within the bounds of American democracy, critics argue that respect for judicial rulings is fundamental to the rule of law, regardless of the country involved.
The statement by the Nigerian politician has since fueled conversations on social media and among political commentators about consistency, accountability, and the universal meaning of democratic principles.
