ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has said Nigeria’s energy transition programme is not aimed at abandoning hydrocarbons but at producing them more efficiently, reducing their environmental impact and maximising value from the country’s oil and gas resources.
The Commission Chief Executive, Mrs. Oluveremi A. Eyesan, stated this while outlining Nigeria’s energy transition programme at the ongoing Gastech 2026 in Bangkok.
According to Eyesan, Nigeria’s approach is to ensure that hydrocarbons remain an important component of the country’s energy strategy while efforts are intensified to make production more efficient and environmentally sustainable.
She said the NUPRC’s regulatory priorities include production reliability, domestic refining through effective coordination of the domestic crude supply obligation, gas monetisation and strengthening energy security.
Eyesan explained that these priorities are being pursued alongside tighter emissions management, stressing that the objectives should be viewed as complementary rather than contradictory.
She cited the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme (NGFCP) as an example of how the Commission is combining energy development with environmental protection.
According to her, the programme has seen flare sites allocated to entities capable of converting gas that would otherwise have been flared into commercially valuable uses.
She noted that the initiative would increase the availability of gas for energy while preventing the environmental damage associated with gas flaring.
Eyesan said the success of Nigeria’s energy transition should ultimately be measured by tangible outcomes, including improved energy security, greater affordability, increased investment, job creation and enhanced industrial value.
She added that reducing emissions and methane should also remain key indicators of progress.
Precise Post recalls that the NUPRC chief executive’s remarks came as industry stakeholders gathered at Gastech 2026 to discuss developments, investments and the future direction of the global gas, LNG, hydrogen and energy sectors.
