he Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced plans to intensify enforcement actions against unruly passengers, following a noticeable uptick in disruptive behaviour at airports and onboard aircraft.
This development follows a disturbing incident on August 10, when a female passenger onboard an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos physically assaulted flight crew and security personnel mid-air. Footage of the altercation, which quickly went viral on the social media platform X, shows the passenger aggressively confronting airline staff during the flight.
In an official statement issued on Monday, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mike Achimugu, condemned the rise in such behaviour and affirmed that offenders would face swift and decisive consequences.
“We cannot continue to flout aviation regulations. Safety is non-negotiable,” Achimugu stated.
“Passengers must comply with the same rules in Nigeria that they respect abroad. Moving forward, tougher sanctions and rapid enforcement will be standard practice.”
Achimugu further stressed that the authority is enhancing its response protocols to ensure a faster and more robust handling of in-flight and airport-related security breaches.
Meanwhile, Ibom Air has confirmed that the offending passenger has been placed on a no-fly list, permanently banning her from future flights with the airline.
“Her actions endangered the safety of our crew, fellow passengers, and the aircraft itself,” the airline said in a statement, reaffirming that the safety and well-being of both passengers and personnel remains its highest priority.
This incident occurred just days after another high-profile case involving legendary Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1. The artist allegedly spilled an alcoholic beverage on airport personnel while boarding a ValueJet flight at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
In response to the growing trend of in-flight disturbances, the NCAA also revealed plans to roll out public awareness campaigns aimed at educating passengers on acceptable conduct and their obligations under Nigerian aviation law.
The authority has called on all aviation stakeholders and agencies to strengthen their enforcement mechanisms and eliminate any procedural gaps.
“We are committed to restoring discipline and ensuring Nigerian airspace remains safe and respectful for all travelers,” Achimugu added.
