NUJ Calls For End To Intimidation, Impunity Against Journalists

In a statement in Abuja on Wednesday, the National Secretary of the union, Malam Shuaibu Leman, said the union joined the rest of the world to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. He urged government at all levels to prioritise the safety and security of journalists. “They should ensure that attacks against journalists are properly investigated and culprits made to account for their crimes. “The safety and security of journalists must be tackled squarely ahead of the 2023 election when journalists that cover elections are routinely exposed to attacks, intimidation and harassment by political actors and agents of the state. “We have observed over the years the way and manner journalists suffer various acts of reprisals for critical reporting in the country. “Many journalists face physical assaults; their equipment destroyed in the process, while the female journalists are sexually harassed,” Leman said. NEMA Donates Drugs, Consumables To 3 Hospitals In Kano

By Ramatu Garba Kano, – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on Wednesday, donated drugs and consumable items to three hospitals in Kano, to support victims of disasters in the state. NEMA Director-General, Mustapha Habib, said the donation was part of Federal Government’s effort to support people affected by gas explosions and other forms of disasters. Habib, represented by the Territorial Coordinator for Kano and Jigawa offices, Dr Nuraddeen Abdullahi, said that the agency had earlier promised to support the three hospitals for the prompt medical attention given to the victims of explosion. The hospitals include: Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital (MMSH), Ja’en Primary Health Care and Sharada Primary Health Care. He listed some of the items donated to include 10 cartons of IV infusions, including five per cent normal saline, hand sanitiser, methylated spirit, 50 cartons of Hydrocortisone Injection, surgical gloves among, others. Applicant In Court For Alleged Attempt To Steal A Car

By Hauwa Gold Abuja, – An applicant, Yusuf Isah, was on Wednesday docked in an Upper Area Court, Karu, Abuja, for allegedly attempting to steal a car at Garki shopping plaza. The police charged Isah, who is of no fixed address, with attempt to commit an offence. The Prosecution Counsel, Olanrewaju Osho, told the court that the matter was reported at the FCT Area Command by a team of Police officers attached to Garki Division. Osho told the court that on Sept. 14, the defendant went Garki Shopping plaza’s parking lot, and used a master key to open a car. Senate Committee to Invite Minister of Finance over Army Budget Implementation

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Ali Ndume, who made this known during the 2023 Budget Defence of the Army on Tuesday said the invitation becomes necessary in view of the 2022 budget performance of the Army which is below their expectation. London, – British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has reversed his decision to skip COP27 and will attend the climate summit in Egypt next week, he has announced. Sunak wrote on Twitter that there was “no long-term prosperity without action on climate change”, and no energy security without investing in renewables, as he confirmed he would attend this year’s UN talks. Agric minister dismisses concern over imminent food shortage in advance

NG-CARES: FCT Minister Of State Disburses 215m To Beneficiaries

By Salisu Sani-Idris Abuja, – The FCT Minister of State, Dr Ramatu Aliyu, has disbursed N215 million to 5,054 beneficiaries of the COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) in the nation’s capital. Aliyu, while disbursing the funds, explained that the figure was made up of 3,650 beneficiaries of Social Transfer scheme, and 1,404 beneficiaries of Livelihoods grant. She said that the social transfer would run for 12 months of six cycles, adding that all the beneficiaries would be receiving stipends of N20, 000.00 bimonthly payments. Aliyu also said that beneficiaries under the livelihood Grants programme would receive between N50, 000.00 to N135, 000.00, one-off payment, depending on the business category.
