German University To Return 4 Looted Antique Vases To Italy

Kiel (Germany), – Kiel University in northern Germany on Wednesday announced that it would return four antique vases to Italy. According to the university, the four vases, part of the city art gallery’s antiquity collection, most likely originated from looted excavations in the Apulia region and were bought with funds from the state of Schleswig Holstein. It said the deal was made through an Italian art dealer, Gianfranco Becchina and the four vases are to be returned in 2024. Annette Haug, head of the antiquities collection said “we have a moral responsibility to return these pieces. Looted excavations destroy scientific knowledge worldwide.’’ Italian authorities had approached Haug and Schleswig Holstein in 2018 and the vases were allegedly exported without the permission of the Italian state. According to the university, the purchase of vases in the 1980s and 1990s was legal under German law at the time, but not without controversy. In exchange for the vases, the Kiel collection was to receive items on loan from Italy’s collection. (dpa/NAN)

Moscow, – Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, on Wednesday said this week’s deadly rocket explosion in Poland was a provocation by the West, warning of a potential third world war. “The story with the Ukrainian ‘rocket strikes’ on a Polish farm, proves only one thing: The West is increasing with its hybrid war against Russia the probability of starting a third world war,” the 57-year-old Putin’s ally tweeted. The Russian Ministry of Defence had also initially described the rocket strike as a “provocation”. Russian military bloggers shared images of the rocket debris, suggesting the rockets were part of an S-300 anti-aircraft defence system fired by Ukraine. Dmitry Polyansky, the deputy head of Russia’s UN delegation, also denied that Moscow was responsible for the deadly incident in Poland. Polyansky went on to suggest that an upcoming UN Security Council session, scheduled last week by Western nations, was evidence of a conspiracy. “And now, suddenly, on the evening (before the UN Security Council session) there is a ‘rocket attack’ on Poland,” the Russian diplomat said. However, in the wake of the rocket …

Sherwood said that Ronaldo’s revelations about the inner dealings at Man United have made him lean towards Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi in the eternal ‘Messi vs Ronaldo’ debate. Speaking to talkSPORT, Sherwood believes Ronaldo’s recent interview was a shame, adding that Messi, who is currently with the Argentina squad ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, would be laughing at the Portugal captain. “I don’t think what Ronaldo is saying is groundbreaking, I really don’t. I think it’s more groundbreaking the fact that he has come and said it so publicly and obviously done it on a huge platform,” Sherwood told talkSPORT. “He could have gone to Oprah Winfrey or Piers Morgan — he has taken the English option. I am astounded that he’s come out and done it. I really am, I think it tarnishes his legacy.” “I think the little man Lionel Messi must be sitting in Qatar in his camp laughing, looking …
