The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said he foresaw the ongoing crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) long before it began, adding that every warning he gave about the party has now come true.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, made the remark on Friday during his monthly media parley in Abuja, where he expressed concern over the wave of defections rocking the PDP, describing the situation as “embarrassing.”
“Right from day one, I said that if things continued the way they were going, the PDP would keep losing. Things are not being done properly, and we would all regret it — and that’s exactly what’s happening today,” Wike said.
He added:
“It’s very embarrassing. One of the governors was the chairman of the convention committee. Even though I knew they were all playing games, I said it from the beginning — and everything I said has come to pass. Tell me one that hasn’t.”
The minister reiterated that the party’s internal issues must be addressed urgently to prevent further decline.
Meanwhile, Wike also spoke about leadership principles during his keynote address at the 2025 Innovate Africa Conference in Abuja, themed “Reimagining Africa’s Leadership and Investment.”
He stressed that true leadership involves taking bold and timely decisions, regardless of whose interests are affected.
Recalling how he stopped the police from constructing buildings under a high-tension cable in Abuja, Wike said the decision, though controversial, was necessary.
“I have been confronted with leadership situations. When a leader cannot take decisions at challenging times, that is not leadership. But when decisions are made boldly, the results justify the action,” he stated.
He further explained that leadership should focus on ensuring resources are used for public good, not personal or political gain.
“For me, being appointed as the Minister of the FCT comes with responsibility. I have the political will — without apologies to anyone — to ensure that Abuja competes with other major cities around the world,” Wike added.
